It is hard for most to think that in this "modern and enlightened age" people actually summon and worship the devil.  Yet it is a fact that Satanism in its various forms, exists and is due the consideration of both the church and law enforcement agencies.  Ignoring it will not make it go away, but neither will overstating the cases.

In order to clearly and accurately expands upon Satanism, it is essential to have a precise working definition of it.  Most Christians are ignorant of the true nature of Satanism.  It is usually equated with the occult, witchcraft and New Age movement or psychic phenomena.  Satanism is a religious alliance and worshipful allegiance to the devil, who is a distinct, personal celestial being, or an impersonal force of energy that seeks to destroy the Creator's biblical purpose for man.  Through direct worship of this evil, the Satanist seeks to obtain a manipulative power through certain diabolical ritual techniques.

Occult is from the Latin "occultus," meaning" secret. hidden, or esoteric knowledge and practices."  It originates from and constitues with demonic spirits, ie. Ouija Board, divination (fortune telling), necromancy( seance).  Hence, the Bible expressly condemns it.  Witchcraft, on the other hand, is a diverse religious movement whose followers are polytheistic (many gods) and/or pantheistic (nature worshippers). It is the art of attempting to willfully shape events by the mediumistic summoning of supernatural powers.  The dynamic power behind witchcraft is not an extension of brain/mind potential (like that associated with some forms of the New Age movement) but is a subtle, manipulative, personal power the resides with the normally intangible sphere of reality.  This is tapped through certain ritualistic and magic techniques. 

Satanic Ritual Abuse known has SRA is ritual abuse that is done in the name of "Satan" and Satan's followers.  Ritual Abuse known has RA is the repeated abuse over and over again.  RA is abuse performed with a meaning to or belief on certain days or times. SRA/RA is abuse that happens over a long period of time and usually involves repeated physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. That is committed by one or more people according to a prescribed ritual, whose primary aim of which is to fulfill the need to worship the Christian devil, Satan.  

Sadistic Ritual Abuse is the Psychological, sexual, and physical assault committed by one or more people according to a prescribed ritual, whose goal is to either fulfill a need to abuse others or to program the victim so that they can precisely controlled in the future.

The physical abuse that is done in SRA/RA is severe and can include torture and killing of animals, children and adults.  Psychological abuse is very devastating to the child or person and involves the use of ritual indoctrination.  This many involve mind control techniques to make the victim have a profound terror of the cult or group.  Most victims live in a state of terror, mind control and dissociation.

SRA/RA cults use a brain washing and mind control technique.  The use would be intended to perpetuate a group into the future or to create group members with no self-will, who will behave like robots when a triggered.  It would be accomplished by very severe abuse starting in early childhood and continuing over a period of years.  False memories are recollection (often recovered during therapy which involves guided imagery, age regression and hypnotism) which are 1.) of events that never happened, or are 2.) distorted memories of real events.  they are indistinguishable from real memories. Recovered Memories are new memories (typically uncovered during therapy by women in their late 20's to late 40's)  Most are of sexual molestation during childhood.  These memories are believed by some to be actively suppressed by the child shortly after the event.  Recovery is often a long term and difficult process. Others believe that these memories are not of real events but are based upon memory fragments from horror movies, books, TV programs etc.  They evolve into memories by either self therapy or counseling with a therapist involving such suggestive techniques as a hypnotism, guided imagery, dream analysis, imagining abuse, etc.  In about 20% of all cases, recovered memories involve SRA.

Public Satanism

This is a religious movement whose followers fit the basic stereotype of what most people have concerning what a Satanist believes and does.  Their ritual and beliefs are based upon traditional Roman Catholicism, except everything is reversed.  For instance, they often might recite the Lord's Prayer backwards or insert blasphemies in it, or the communion cup is often filled with animal or human blood, urine or anything designed to disgrace it. (These practices derive from the infamous Black Mass)  They are not "underground" or secretive concerning their existence.  There are close to a dozen of these groups in America, operating as organized tax-exempt churches.  

The most infamous pubic Satanist organization is best represented by LaVey's " Church of Satan" founded by Anton LaVay.

Secret Satanism

This is an underground movement involving people who are extremely secretive concerning their existence and who do their best to avoid detection.  Why?  Because the participants are mostly well-educated professionals who cannot afford to be exposed as Satanists.  They may be lawyers, school teacher, accountants, secretaries, corpored officers and a host of other white-collar workers.

Like LaVay's followers, the secret Satanists meet periodically to pay homage to Satan.  While both are mocking Christianity by night, the secret Satanists might profess Christ by day.  Many are active members of local churches, and unlike LaVay's church, this group involves people who believe in and wish to worship Lucifer (the Devil) superstitiously in exchange for power.

In corresponding to their theological beliefs, some secret satanic groups worship the biblical concept of the devil.  Other view him as the god of good and light.  Therefore, if this group were to perform a ritual sacrifice, it would be from a supernatural perspective.  The slaughtering of the victim is literally a satan or demons, who in return will grant or cause to be brought about whatever is desired.  Such power and advantage comes at no small price.  A household animal. offered to the Prince of Darkness, will suffice for a small request.  The sacrifice of a cow or horse may be required to obtain greater gain.  The younger and healthier the animal, and even more so in the case of humans, the worthier the sacrifice.  Supernatural power, called "mana" may be transferred to the Satanist who is willing to eat the organs of the sacrifice.

As Christians, little children are looked upon as precious and innocent.  Conversely, the sacrificing of a child would be the most supreme sacrifice for a Satanist.  It is plainly one of the greatest perversions of Christian principles possible, and for this reason it is considered the more magically potent.  

It should not surprise anyone to find intelligent people worshipping Satan in exchange for personal gain.  The Devil offered Jesus the world for a bowed knee!

Self-styled Satanism

Also known as "gang"  Satanism, is a highly unorganized movement composed of young people (predominantly white males) ranging in age from early teens to early twenties.  Few communities escape the devastation of this most dangerous form of Satanism.  It is also the most common.  The primary interest and activities of this group of Satanists are centered around one or more illegal activities.  Satanism is only a secondary interests, in which the attempt to mimic the above two groups, and forms a kind of backdrop for the primary pursuit.  Interests may include child molestations, burglary, group sex and homosexuality.  Add to these Satanic rituals, hallucinogenic drugs and heavy metal music and a lethal combination exits!

When ritualistic murders and satanic crimes get "front page press,"  it is usually the work of the self-styled Satanists.  It would appear that if and when they commit crimes they do their best to destroy any evidence; thus, most of the crimes that come to light are committed by the self-styled "dabbler."

Conclusion

Once a person joins a satanic group, it is almost impossible to leave.  Through blackmail or threats to harm one's family members, the reluctant Satanist is forced  to remain loyal to the group.  Those conveying a desire to leave the group may find themselves ritually murdered or forced to commit suicide.  Suicide is the ultimate act of homage one can pay to Satan.  It is one's highest tribute to the Devil.
